HOTEL: Seattle Marriott Waterfront
LOCATION: Seattle, Washington
SUBJECT: Deluxe Queen Bedroom
Macro versus Micro. The room should answer that question by itself. This room had great detail, but was quite small. Had we forced ourselves to pull back and get every corner of the room, it would have lost a lot of the detail that was its strong point to begin with. This is what we call a "getter". It's a shot that evokes emotion.
How? This shot is not informational, intentionally. It doesn't show where the television is in relation to the head board, or if the sitting area has a bright window next to it. Those shots are often important, but THIS shot provides something else - detail in the micro. We used soft, pooled lighting to accentuate the beautifully arranged pillows. Our intent was to make this shot a "getter" in that it would get you to an emotional state - maybe sleepy or comfortable - and you would want to be in that room.
If you notice carefully, we also controlled and highlighted detail on the throw in the foreground to bring out the pattern and color. Without accentuation in the details, the shot would have been flat and not nearly as successful.
Our favorite thing about this room? Well, the little packets of Starbucks Coffee complimented the coffee maker quite nicely. Did we mention we're fans of coffee??
