RESORT: Suncadia Resort
LOCATION: Cle Elum, Washington
SUBJECT: Portals, Suncadia's Dining Room
Imagine dungeness crab eggs benedict for breakfast... or lobster macaroni and cheese for lunch. Maybe Swift river trout for dinner? Well, lucky us. A sweet perk of shooting at a property for multiple days, you tend to eat rather well. The chef at Portals was as nice as he was talented - and we were always welcomed and fed quite well.
Of course, the only time to shoot an intimate shot of the dining area in the evening is long after the last diner leaves. Close to midnight, we pulled off this shot in relatively short order. That doesn't mean we could rush through it - the exposures had to be all across the board. The lighting was extremely important, as the room was very dark in tone, and to hold the highlights in the large fireplace, and still show some detail under the table and chairs, was a task that needed rapt attention, especially so late in the evening.
Hats off to the servers who worked so hard to set and align the tables for the photo. While the dining room looked great when we arrived, there's a big difference between a room that looks great and a room that's ready to shoot. The camera is MUCH less forgiving than the eye.
Take a look at that fireplace - probably the longest one I've ever seen. Just how many marshmallows could we roast all at the same time?
